Although this book started out very simple, it did get into some decent detail, tips and tricks for my new Pearl. Each of the features gave a nice introduction and then went into details that I found very helpful and am still working to learn all the shortcuts it lists. I am mostly satisfied with it. I only wish it would have gone deeper still into some aspects of the pearl that I see but don't understand such as the meaning of the different icons next to emails sent. Most are easily understood but some are not and I'd love to understand all of them.

I am glad that I purchased it and recommend it.

Customer Review: Good, short, open - but not AppStore

At 268 pages, this book is shorter than many programming books.

It describes developing for an open (jailbroken) iPhone. After the first edition sold out, this is the version with minor updates for the iPhone 2.x firmware. This book teaches you about the iPhone APIs used by the built-in Apple applications, but you should be aware that it does NOT target the Apple iPhone SDK, and does NOT guide you in developing apps for the AppStore, though the code will generally be applicable for AppStore applications.

It begins with a description of the process of jailbreaking, getting the compiler set up either on the Mac (hard) or the iPhone itself (trivial: http://soi.kd6.us/2008/09/27/so-i-made-my-iphone-say-hello-world/) and an introduction to Objective-C.

This book presents many complete example programs using the various iPhone UIKit controls, and presents information on Quartz (2d graphics) and the sound libraries.

It does not describe OpenGL ES (for high-performance/3D graphics) or web applications and APIs.

I found occasional editing errors - more than I'd expect in an O'Reilly Second Edition, ranging from typos (Quarts instead of Quartz) to old text describing an updated code example, to copy-and-paste errors between similar sections. Nothing too egregious, but distracting.

It comes with all the cables you need to attach to everything. Bluetooth to the cell, wired to the PC for Skype, wall plug, car plug, etc.

Blocks road noise perfectly. Good sound. Clips to visor well. Paired to my blackberry immediately. Charges fast, holds the charge.

Customer Review: Great quality and functionality with high quality sound!

The sound quality on this device is outstanding. I have used it in the car and in my office with great results - It is small enough to put in my purse and as a business person who travels quite a bit, it has been useful to hold conference calls that sound just like when I am in the office. It was easy to pair the device up via bluetooth to my cell phone and also to my computer when I want to use it with Skype. The noise cancelling feature is good. I have talked to people while driving and they said they couldn't tell I was in the car (and I drive a convertible!). I also really like the visor clip - it is spring loaded and holds quite nicely on the visor. When it is not being used for hands-free in the car, the clip is flush with the unit and allows me to put it flat on a desk with no wobbling. The battery life is good, but I like the fact that this comes with everything I need - A car charger, a wall charger and the wires to connect it directly to my phone if I dont want to connect via the bluetooth option. I would highly recommend this product and I am happy with my decision to purchase it!
